When Hideki moves from Hokkaido to Tokyo to attend college, he quickly finds that big city life is much different than he imagined. The widespread use of Persocoms (personal computers designed to look and act like animals or humans) especially astounds him and makes him feel slightly inferior since Hideki cannot afford one. However, when he finds a discarded Persocom in the trash named Chi, Hideki sets about fixing up only to find that she can somehow operate without an OS, forcing Hideki to wonder if she is, in fact, real. The Escaflowne series follows the exploits of a young schoolgirl, Hitomi Konzaki, who is an ordinary enough high school student until a column of light transports Hitomi to a strange world called Gaea. Hitomi aligns herself with a young knight named Van, who she saw in a vision prior to being transported, and they begin a perilous journey with Escaflowne, the legendary god of protection. In these episodes, Hitomi, though she can see the future, somehow fell off a cliff and was saved from her plummet to certain death by an angel she had seen in visions.
