Gokudo, a wandering swordsman and thief, was once the heir to the Kingdom of Esharott. In the 1860s, Japan is in turmoil. Momosuke, a would-be author is travelling the countryside in search of 100 stories with which to compose a book. On the road, he meets a trickster, a puppeteer, and a bird caller. Together, as they travel the countryside, they are witnesses to the ugliest, most base aspects of human nature.
