Lives are lost, powers fade and love endures in the heat of battle. Narrowly escaping his last Hyper-Zoanoid encounter, Sho is forced to retreat, leaving his father in Chronos’ clutches. Determined to rescue him at all costs, he once again dives into the heart of Relic’s Point, braving its Zoanoid defenses. However, he soon finds himself neck-deep in another one of Chronos’ traps, as his helpless friends are targeted by a team of Hyper Zoanoids. With Sho escaping with his father and Makishima holding off a gang of adversaries, it’s up to Murakami to protect Sho’s friends. Fortunately, the mysterious journalist has a few tricks up his sleeve, including the ability to manipulate Zoanoids through mind-control and transform into a creature the likes of which no one has ever seen. But why does he know so much about Chronos, and what is his connection to Guyot? Before any questions can be answered, things go from bad to worse for Sho, as a tragic encounter results not only in the death of someone dear to him, but the loss of his ability to transform into the Guyver. Left defenseless, he is faced with a fearsome strike from both Commander Guyot and the vengeance-seeking Lost Number, Aptom. With his friends defeated, his powers lost and his hope dwindling, he must face his inner demons to rise again from the ashes of defeat.

Three high school students find themselves drawn into a plot to turn humans into metamorphic monsters or "Zoanoids" in this 1989 OAV, based on Yoshiki Takaya's manga. Sho Fukamachi finds a lost "control metal" that transforms him into the super-warrior Guyver via a mecha suit derived from alien DNA. With his friends Tetsuro and Mizuki and the mysterious Guyver III, Sho fights an increasingly nasty series of Zoanoids created by the Chronos corporation: hands get ripped off, holes are blown and punched through bodies, and blood sprays everywhere. The character designs recall <I>Ronin Warriors (1989), and the plot of a sinister corporation trying to take over the world through illegal bio-technical experiments has become a standard in the intervening years. Two live-action films were also based on <I>Guyver. (Rated 13 and older but more appropriate for 15 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, profanity, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

New villains, new monsters, and new allies appear in the second half of this 1989 OAV. As the Japanese branch of the Chronos corporation has been decimated, the powerful Dr. Balcus takes over. Agito infiltrates Chronos--while plotting to destroy the organization. Sho, Tetsuro, and Mizuki are rescued by Masaki, a freelance writer who is really a "Zoalord." No one explains just what a Zoalord is, but the powerful Masaki fills in the back story: humans are actually the product of biological weapons experiments by the alien Creators. The series ends on an inconclusive cliffhanger that implies a sequel, although none was ever made. The filmmakers were clearly running short of money, as the later episodes involve lots of still artwork and recycled animation. The last episode is presented only in English.
